Mariners Bryan Woo Receives Special Recognition in Cy Young Voting image

Bryan Woo’s breakout season with the Seattle Mariners earned him a fifth-place finish in AL Cy Young voting, the results announced Wednesday.

The 25-year-old right-hander collected five fourth-place votes and 16 fifth-place votes from the Baseball Writers’ Association panel.

It’s a fitting recognition for what turned into Woo’s best season yet. His third year in the majors brought his first All-Star selection and the kind of numbers that put him among the game’s emerging aces.

Woo finished 15-7 with a 2.94 ERA over 186.2 innings, striking out 198 batters while walking just 36.

That 5.50 strikeout-to-walk ratio tells the story of his development. Elite pitchers control the strike zone, and Woo’s doing exactly that.

The innings total stands out even more when you consider Woo threw just 121.1 innings last season. That’s a significant jump for a young pitcher, and he handled the workload without missing a beat for most of the year.

He did deal with some late-season wear that limited his postseason availability, but that’s fairly typical for pitchers making that kind of innings leap.

What makes this recognition meaningful is where Woo sits in his career arc. He’s still learning his craft, still adding pieces to an already impressive arsenal. The Cy Young votes represent validation that he’s arrived as one of the league’s better starters.

For Seattle, having a pitcher of Woo’s caliber locked up long-term gives them a cornerstone to build around. The Mariners have been searching for that kind of ace presence, and it looks like they’ve found it.

Woo’s fifth-place showing suggests he’s entering the conversation with the league’s elite arms. That’s exactly where the Mariners need him to be.
