Jose Ramirez reaches another Guardians milestone

Jose Ramirez made Cleveland franchise history Tuesday night, driving in his 938th career RBI during the Guardians’ 2-1 win over Tampa Bay. That RBI triple in the sixth inning moved him past Jim Thome into second place on Cleveland’s all-time list.

He’s now just 146 RBIs behind Hall of Famer Earl Averill for the franchise record.

“Hosey is going to keep doing this, right?” Guardians manager Stephen Vogt said after the game. “He’s going to keep doing this as long as he’s in Cleveland. He’s one of the best players on the planet. It’s just so much fun and a treat that we all get to watch him.”

The milestone caps another excellent season for Ramirez, who’s batting .283 with 27 homers, 74 RBIs and 37 stolen bases. His 5.0 WAR continues a remarkable run of consistency – he’s posted 3.0 WAR or better every season since 2016, except for the shortened 2020 campaign.

That’s the kind of production that’s earned him seven top-10 MVP finishes in 13 seasons, including four top-five showings and runner-up honors in 2020.

Chasing History

At this pace, Ramirez should pass Averill sometime next season. What makes this even more impressive is that all 938 RBIs have come in a Cleveland uniform – a testament to both his loyalty and the organization’s commitment to keeping him around.

The Guardians are currently on the outside looking in for the AL wild card, but they’re still very much in the race. Having a player of Ramirez’s caliber certainly doesn’t hurt their October chances.

It’s worth noting that Ramirez has been doing this quietly for years now. While other stars grab headlines, he just keeps producing at an elite level year after year. The consistency is almost boring at this point – which is probably the highest compliment you can give a player.
