Astros and Mets Clash in Spring Training Showdown

The Astros host the Mets Tuesday afternoon in a Grapefruit League matchup featuring two World Series contenders with plenty of offseason storylines.

New York’s newest star is already making his presence felt. Juan Soto, fresh off signing his massive 15-year, $765 million deal to join the Mets, crushed a towering home run in his first Spring Training at-bat Saturday. The former Yankee’s immediate impact is exactly what the Mets hoped for when they landed the 25-year-old slugger.

Houston, meanwhile, has navigated a challenging offseason. They traded away Kyle Tucker for a package including prospect Cam Smith and couldn’t reach terms with longtime third baseman Alex Bregman. But don’t count the Astros out. Jose Altuve and Yordan Alvarez still anchor a dangerous lineup that should keep them in contention.

Ronel Blanco gets the start for Houston after Monday’s game was washed out. The right-hander posted a 2.80 ERA last season in his first full big league campaign, giving the Astros rotation a boost they’ll need again this year.

The game marks an interesting early test for both clubs as they fine-tune their rosters heading toward Opening Day.
