The Cleveland Guardians sit atop the AL Central heading into June, and they’re clearly positioned to be buyers at the trade deadline. The question isn’t whether they’ll make moves – it’s what they’ll target.
Pitching would be nice, but Tarik Skubal isn’t happening with Detroit unlikely to deal within the division. What Cleveland really needs is another bat in the lineup.
Tim Kelly of Bleacher Report connected the Guardians to a couple of sluggers, with Christian Walker standing out as the most compelling option. The Astros’ first baseman is halfway through a three-year, $60 million deal and could be available if Houston decides to sell.
“An upgrade over Rhys Hoskins, a first base/DH might make the most sense. Would the Guardians be willing to take on the $20 million owed to Christian Walker in 2027 if the Houston Astros are sellers?”
Walker’s having another solid season with 16 home runs and leads the AL with 45 RBIs. He’s hitting .247 with an .812 OPS, along with 10 doubles and 37 runs scored.
The money’s significant – $20 million remaining for 2027 – but Walker brings exactly what Cleveland needs. A right-handed power bat who can play elite defense at first base.
We’re talking about a three-time Gold Glove winner who’d immediately upgrade both the offense and defense. That’s not something you find easily at the trade deadline.
The cost will be steep, both in prospects and salary commitments. But if the Guardians are serious about making a run not just this year but into 2026, Walker represents the type of established veteran who could put them over the top.
The Astros might not be sellers just yet, but Houston’s struggles could change that calculus quickly. Cleveland should be paying attention.
