The San Francisco Giants confirmed that relief pitcher Antonio Jiménez was involved in a car crash in the Dominican Republic on Monday that left three people dead, according to the Daily Mail.

Jiménez, 24, suffered fractures to his femur and spine in the collision and remains in intensive care at a local hospital.

The crash involved an SUV and two scooters. Three men – Alfredo Garcia, Israel Carpio, and Victor de Jesus – were pronounced dead at the scene, Diario Libre reported.

“We are aware of the tragic car accident involving one of our players, Antonio Jiménez, and are in the process of gathering more information. Out of respect for everyone affected and due to the ongoing investigation, we will refrain from further comment at this time.”

That’s the Giants’ full statement so far.

Where Jiménez Stands in the Organization

The left-hander isn’t on the Giants’ top 30 prospects list, but he’s been working his way through their system. He spent 2024 at Triple-A Sacramento, posting a 3.55 ERA in 29 games while striking out 11 batters per nine innings.

Not bad numbers for a guy who hasn’t cracked the prospect rankings yet.

Jiménez was back in the Dominican Republic for winter ball with LIDOM’s Toros del Este. He’s made two appearances with the club this winter – his second straight season playing for the Toros.

The Giants signed him after he elected free agency following the 2024 season. He’d split that year between Double-A Montgomery and Triple-A Durham in Tampa Bay’s system, where he started his pro career back in 2018 as a 17-year-old in the Dominican Summer League.

It’s a long road from the DSL to the majors, and Jiménez was still working toward that debut. Now the focus shifts to his recovery and the ongoing investigation into Monday’s crash.
