Opening Day delivered in a big way. Players etched their names in the record books, teams battled through extra frames, and yes, Shohei Ohtani launched one into the seats just like we all expected.

As teams settle into their opening series, baseball fans are looking ahead to 2025’s first Sunday Night Baseball showcase. ESPN’s flagship MLB broadcast returns with 25 games on the schedule this season.

The Braves and Padres kick things off in what could be an early playoff preview. San Diego hosts the finale of their four-game set with Atlanta to christen this year’s Sunday night slate.

The Padres enter 2025 with their eyes on October, even if they’re already playing from behind in the NL West. Let’s be real – sharing a division with the Dodgers means San Diego is likely battling for a wild card spot from day one. But this team is built for postseason success.

Fernando Tatis Jr. headlines a stacked lineup that includes Manny Machado, Xander Bogaerts, and batting champion Luis Arráez. The rotation looks formidable with Michael King, Dylan Cease, and veteran Yu Darvish leading the way, plus a bullpen that should keep them in games late.

Atlanta enters with championship expectations once again, though they’re not at full strength to start the year. Ronald Acuña Jr. is still working his way back from injury and likely won’t see the field until May. The lineup remains dangerous without him – Matt Olson, Ozzie Albies, Austin Riley, and offseason addition Jurickson Profar give the Braves plenty of firepower.

On the mound, reigning Cy Young winner Chris Sale anchors the rotation. Spencer Strider is progressing in his recovery from elbow surgery, which should eventually give Atlanta one of the most intimidating 1-2 punches in baseball.
