Yankees Moving On From Verdugo as Dominguez Era Approaches
The Yankees are officially preparing to hand left field duties to top prospect Jasson Dominguez in 2025, leaving free agent Alex Verdugo without much of a market this offseason.
Verdugo, who’s coming off a polarizing season in pinstripes, hasn’t generated much buzz throughout the winter. While a Bronx reunion seems unlikely, he could find a home with an AL Central contender looking to bolster their outfield.
Steve Adams of MLB Trade Rumors sees the Royals as a potential fit:
Royals: If it’s not abundantly clear by now, the Royals need outfield help. Relying on Melendez/Isbel/Renfroe just feels far too flimsy for a club with postseason aspirations. It worked out last year, but Kansas City can’t count on another 10-WAR season for Bobby Witt Jr. or impeccable health from the top four starters. Verdugo is coming off a down year himself, but he was a durable and reasonably productive regular from 2020-23. His plus bat-to-ball skills fit the Royals’ offensive approach, too.
Verdugo earned $8 million last season per Spotrac, and might end up being a value signing after his quiet offseason. The 28-year-old outfielder has also been connected to the Astros, yet remains available as spring training games get underway.
What’s interesting is that despite his struggles at the plate, Verdugo was well-liked in the Yankees clubhouse. His defense in left field graded out as at least league average by most metrics, providing some value beyond his bat.
The Royals have built a competitive team around superstar shortstop Bobby Witt Jr. and could use outfield depth. They’re in a position where taking a chance on Verdugo makes sense, especially if his price tag continues to drop as the season approaches.
