The Atlanta Braves haven’t started extension talks with catcher Drake Baldwin, despite his breakout rookie season and red-hot start to 2026.
Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reports the Braves “have yet to seriously engage Baldwin in discussions on an extension, according to people briefed on the matter.”
That’s noteworthy for a franchise that’s built its recent success around locking up young talent early.
Think Ronald Acuña Jr., Ozzie Albies, and Michael Harris II – all signed to team-friendly extensions before they could hit free agency. It’s been Atlanta’s blueprint for staying competitive while controlling payroll.
Baldwin seems like the perfect candidate for that approach. The 25-year-old just won Rookie of the Year after a stellar debut season, and he’s been even better this year.
Through 36 games, Baldwin’s slashing .313/.922 OPS with nine homers and leads MLB with 46 hits and 33 runs scored. His 1.8 bWAR already puts him on track for All-Star consideration.
Why the Wait?
The Braves control Baldwin through the 2030 season, so there’s no immediate pressure. But waiting has risks – especially with a player performing at this level.
Every stellar month increases Baldwin’s leverage. If he keeps this pace and enters MVP conversations, his asking price will only climb.
Atlanta’s been the best team in baseball this season, with their starting rotation exceeding expectations and their offense clicking. Baldwin’s production behind the plate has been a huge part of that success.
The way I see it, the Braves might be waiting to see if this is sustainable or just a hot streak. But catchers who can hit like this don’t come around often.
If Atlanta doesn’t find common ground by 2030, they’ll risk losing Baldwin to free agency – and watching him sign a massive deal elsewhere.
