The Dodgers are sitting pretty as the team to beat right now, but they’re not done swinging for the fences. They’re still chasing Kyle Tucker, though like any smart front office, they’ve got backup plans brewing.
If Tucker slips away, FanSided’s Chris Landers thinks Los Angeles should pivot to NPB star Kazuma Okamoto. The contact hitter caught eyes playing alongside Shohei Ohtani for Team Japan in the 2023 World Baseball Classic.
Here’s what makes Okamoto intriguing for the Dodgers.
“Unlike with Toronto, firepower is not a concern for this Los Angeles team; they don’t need to immediately scramble for the next best bat on the market regardless of fit. Instead, Andrew Friedman should continue to prioritize versatility, and Okamoto would be a weapon in the mold of guys like Tommy Edman and Hyeseong Kim.”
The versatility angle is key. Okamoto can slide into left field when needed, though it’s not his strongest defensive spot. More importantly, he can spell aging sluggers Max Muncy and Freddie Freeman at the corners. That’s valuable depth, especially with Muncy potentially hitting free agency next winter.
The numbers from Japan tell a solid story. Over 11 NPB seasons, Okamoto’s slashed .277/.361/.521 with 248 home runs and 717 RBI in 1,074 games. That’s consistent production from a guy who knows how to make contact.
What’s appealing here is how Okamoto’s skill set would fit into the Dodgers’ lineup. His contact-heavy approach means plenty of RBI opportunities batting behind their power guys. On the flip side, he’d score runs himself getting on base ahead of that stacked lineup.
The financial piece makes sense too. Compared to the massive contracts already on the books, Okamoto would come relatively cheap. For a team that’s not afraid to spend, adding that kind of value at a reasonable price is exactly what Andrew Friedman loves.
It’s the type of move that would keep the Dodgers ahead of the pack. They’re already the favorites, but adding another versatile piece who can contribute both offensively and defensively? That’s how you stay on top.
The Dodgers have built something special, and they’re not looking to coast. Whether it’s Tucker or Okamoto, they’re determined to keep adding pieces that can help them repeat as champions.
