Yankees Could Target Cubs’ DFA’d Prospect Workman to Solve Third Base Need
The Yankees might have a chance to address their third base situation after the Cubs surprisingly designated Gage Workman for assignment.
New York’s 15-10 record has them atop the AL East with one of baseball’s most complete rosters. While pitching injuries remain their primary concern, third base stands as the other position where the Yankees could use an upgrade.
The Cubs’ decision to DFA Workman, their No. 29 prospect, creates an opportunity for the Yankees to potentially swing a deal for the 25-year-old infielder, according to FanSided’s Jacob Mountz.
“On Wednesday, the Chicago Cubs shockingly gave up their No. 29 prospect to bring back veteran utility infielder, Nicky Lopez,” Mountz wrote. “Lost in the transaction is Gage Workman, who caught fire during spring training hitting an astonishing .364 with four home runs.”
What makes Workman particularly intriguing for the Yankees is his left-handed bat that could thrive at Yankee Stadium’s short porch. He’s also considered a defense-first infielder who can handle both shortstop and third base at a potentially elite level.
“Adding Workman, whose left-handed bat might work wonders at Yankee Stadium, would not only offer another upside bat, but a potentially elite glove,” Mountz noted. “Given their lack of quality infield depth, asking about Workman seems to an easy way out of a tough predicament.”
Though Workman has struggled against left-handed pitching, his combination of power and speed makes him an attractive target. In his brief big-league experience, he went 3-for-14 with a double.
His minor league numbers tell a more complete story. Last season, Workman slashed .280/.366/.476/.842 with 18 home runs and 30 stolen bases. That’s the kind of production that could help the Yankees both immediately and long-term.
The timing seems perfect for the Yankees to make a move. Workman comes with years of team control and could provide an impact on both sides of the ball as New York looks to strengthen their roster for a championship push.
