Contenders Target Braves Star Slugger Before Trade Deadline

The Atlanta Braves are preparing to sell at the trade deadline, and three-time All-Star Marcell Ozuna looks like their most appealing piece.

With the Braves sitting over ten games back from the last Wild Card spot, they’re facing long odds for October. That’s why MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand called Ozuna the “best available player” at designated hitter on Tuesday.

Makes sense when you think about it.

In a market that’s short on power bats, most contending teams could use what Ozuna brings. The 34-year-old slugger has mashed 92 home runs since 2023, and he’s the kind of hitter who can change a game with one swing.

“In a market short on power bats, Ozuna should have some appeal for contenders seeking some pop at the designated hitter spot,” Feinsand wrote. “Ozuna started off strong this season (.901 OPS through 55 games), and although he posted a .547 OPS over his next 35 contests, he’s still a power threat who can change a game with one swing.”

That’s the thing about Ozuna – even when he’s struggling, you don’t want to face him in a big spot. He’s slashing .235/.361/.751 this season with 13 home runs and 42 RBIs, which isn’t spectacular but still carries that threat.

The timing works out perfectly for Atlanta to move him. Ozuna’s in the final year of his four-year, $65 million contract, so there’s no long-term commitment for the acquiring team. And with the Braves unlikely to re-sign the 34-year-old, they might as well get something back.

Feinsand gave Ozuna a “Medium” buzz factor, noting that Atlanta will likely try to move the DH for a prospect or two. That seems about right.

What makes this different is Ozuna’s track record. He was an All-Star last season and would’ve been a four-time selection if there had been an All-Star game in 2020. Any contending team looking for lineup protection would be smart to kick the tires.

The way I see it, someone’s going to get a proven slugger with postseason experience at a reasonable price. For the Braves, it’s better than watching him walk for nothing this winter.
