The Red Sox went on a spending spree this offseason, bringing in Alex Bregman, Garrett Crochet, Walker Buehler and Aroldis Chapman to bolster their roster. Bregman’s signing effectively closed the door on any pursuit of Nolan Arenado, with Boston settling on Bregman at third, Rafael Devers at DH, and Kristian Campbell handling second base duties.
But the Arenado-to-Boston possibility might not be completely dead.
During the offseason, Katie Woo of The Athletic reported that the Cardinals’ star third baseman was open to playing first base if it meant facilitating a trade. That flexibility could become relevant at the trade deadline, especially if Triston Casas continues to struggle at first for the Red Sox.
“Some flexibility can’t hurt, and the fact he’s even willing to entertain the possibility also seems to speak to Arenado’s eagerness to waive his no-trade clause,” CBS Sports reported last offseason.
The 10-time Gold Glover is hitting .342 heading into Wednesday’s series finale against the Pirates. He’s clearly found his groove at the plate again after a down 2023 season. His right-handed swing would likely play well at Fenway Park, where the Green Monster in left field has historically benefited similar hitters.

The Cardinals and Red Sox are teams heading in opposite directions. St. Louis isn’t expected to contend in 2025, while Boston is positioning itself for a postseason push. That dynamic creates the perfect conditions for a deadline deal.
If Arenado continues hitting and the Cardinals fall out of contention, don’t be surprised if the Red Sox come calling. Adding his bat and glove—even at first base rather than his natural position—could be exactly what Boston needs to challenge in the competitive AL East.
