The Miami Marlins are diving into another rebuild for 2025, continuing a pattern that’s defined the franchise since its 1993 debut. Despite two World Series rings, they’ve struggled to build lasting success – and now they’re starting fresh with a roster most fans won’t recognize.
The team’s promising 2023 campaign gave way to a tough 2024 season that saw Miami’s front office trade away their established stars for prospects. It’s a familiar story for Marlins faithful.
Sandy Alcantara, the team’s ace and former Cy Young winner, is working his way back from Tommy John surgery. But even if he returns to form, he’s likely to be wearing different colors by the trade deadline. That’s left Miami’s once-enviable rotation looking pretty thin.
Here’s where things get interesting. Just Baseball’s Leo Morgenstern suggests the Marlins could be a perfect landing spot for Patrick Corbin, the veteran lefty who’s testing free agency.
Corbin, 35, knows a thing or two about rebuilding teams. He joined the Nationals in time for their 2019 World Series run, then stuck around through their teardown. His numbers won’t wow anyone – he’s got a 4.51 career ERA and a 103-131 record, with strikeout totals that have dipped since 2019.
Thing is, Corbin’s biggest asset is his reliability. He’s made at least 31 starts each of the last four seasons. For a young team needing innings, that’s valuable.
At this point in his career, Patrick Corbin can only offer one thing: He can pitch a full season. As for the Marlins, there’s only one thing we know for certain: As bad as things get, they still have to play all 162 games.
Morgenstern’s got a point. The Marlins need someone to take the ball every fifth day, and Corbin’s shown he can do exactly that. It might not be flashy, but it could be just what Miami needs as they rebuild… again.
