The Milwaukee Brewers posted the best record in the National League last season, but they’ve made things harder on themselves heading into 2025.
Trading ace Freddy Peralta to the New York Mets earlier this month brought back quality prospects, but it left a hole in their rotation. Now they’re scrambling to fill it.
With spring training approaching, the Brewers are eyeing what’s left in free agency to add pitching depth. MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand thinks they’ll make a move soon.
“With very little experience behind Brandon Woodruff in that rotation, Milwaukee could look to add a veteran arm before the season,” Feinsand writes. “A reunion with Jose Quintana is always a possibility, though there are a number of free agents who could fit the bill.”
Jose Quintana makes plenty of sense for Milwaukee. He’s coming off a solid season with the Brewers where he went 11-7 with a 3.96 ERA in 24 starts. The 37-year-old lefty has posted four straight seasons with an ERA under 4.00, showing he’s still got something left.
That’s the type of reliability the Brewers need right now.
Chris Bassitt is another veteran arm still available after helping Toronto reach Game 7 of the World Series. He’s proven he can handle pressure situations.
The way I see it, Milwaukee can’t afford to go into the season thin on pitching. They had the best record in the NL for a reason, and giving that up without a fight doesn’t make sense for a franchise trying to compete.
You can never have too much pitching depth, especially when you’re a smaller-market club that needs every advantage. The Brewers know they need to act before spring training gets underway.
