Brewers Brice Turang Home Run Hitting Binge Better Than Shohei Ohtani

Brice Turang is putting together one of the most unlikely power surges you’ll see all season.

The Milwaukee Brewers second baseman has gone deep 12 times since August 1st – more than Shohei Ohtani’s 10 homers in that same stretch. Let that sink in for a moment.

We’re talking about a guy who entered August with just six home runs on the year. Now he’s sitting at 18 for the season, which is already triple his career high.

The context makes this even more wild. Turang hit six homers in his entire rookie season back in 2023. His previous career high was seven last year.

But something’s clicked for the 25-year-old, and it’s not just the power numbers.

Turang’s batting .289 – a career best by a wide margin. His stolen base total is down to 24 from last year’s 50, but that’s probably because he’s spending more time trotting around the bases instead of trying to steal them.

It’s the kind of breakout that scouts dreamed about when Milwaukee drafted him 21st overall in 2018.

What makes Turang’s development interesting is how his prospect stock shifted before that draft. Early in his high school career, he looked like he could be a generational talent. By draft time, scouts viewed him as a safe pick – high floor, but maybe not the ceiling they originally projected.

Turns out they might’ve been wrong about that ceiling.

The timing couldn’t be better for Milwaukee. The Brewers are sitting pretty atop their division, and having Turang turn into this version of himself gives them another legitimate weapon heading into October.

Will this pace continue? Probably not – 12 homers in 45 days isn’t exactly sustainable for anyone, let alone a guy who’d never hit more than seven in a season.

But even if Turang cools off, he’s already shown something that changes how opposing teams have to approach him. That’s the kind of development that can make the difference in a playoff series.
