The Atlanta Braves are sitting pretty at 18-8, holding a comfortable 6.5-game lead over the second-place Miami Marlins in the NL East. But even with that cushion, they’re eyeing upgrades to their rotation as injuries continue to mount.
A recent mock trade has Atlanta making a significant move to address their pitching needs, though it’d cost them some valuable prospects.
The Trade:
• Braves get: Joe Ryan
• Twins get: JR Ritchie, Owen Murphy, Luis Guanipa
“At 18–8 and first in the NL East, the Braves are in clear win-now mode, which makes a move for Joe Ryan logical. Even with a strong start, they can still look to strengthen the rotation for October, and Ryan gives them a reliable, strikeout-capable starter who deepens their playoff pitching depth.”
That’s the thinking from Ryan Shea of SI, who sees Atlanta in position to “swing big while ahead” rather than wait for problems to surface later.
It makes sense. The Braves know their hot start won’t last forever, and the rest of the NL East isn’t going to stay quiet all season. Adding a pitcher like Ryan now, when they’re in a position of strength, gives them insurance for both the stretch run and October.
Ryan should be one of the most coveted starters available at the deadline. He’s got the strikeout ability and reliability that playoff rotations need.
The price is steep – giving up three prospects isn’t cheap – but that’s what happens when you’re trying to land impact pitching. For a Braves team that’s always competitive and knows how quickly things can change in baseball, it might be worth it to strike while they’re ahead.
