The Atlanta Braves have built their reputation around elite starting pitching. But after 2025, that foundation looks shaky.

Spencer Strider and Spencer Schwellenbach are the only starters locked up beyond next season. Everyone else? Gone.

“Beyond Spencer Strider and Spencer Schwellenbach, there are no clear locks for the Atlanta Braves rotation beyond 2026,” HTHB’s Chase Owens wrote.

That’s why Alex Anthopoulos isn’t just looking for warm bodies. The Braves GM wants impact.

“We’ve explored the starting rotation, adding and getting some type of starter, whether that’s trade or signing. We’d like for it to be someone impactful, someone we think can start a playoff game.”

Atlanta already kicked the tires on Freddy Peralta before Milwaukee dealt him elsewhere. They’re being selective, but time’s running short.

Enter Framber Valdez

The best starter left on the market might be exactly what Atlanta needs. Framber Valdez brings championship experience and left-handed depth to a rotation that’s already dangerous.

FanSided’s Mark Powell thinks it’s a natural fit.

“Valdez is the best starting pitcher available after Ranger Suarez signed with the Boston Red Sox. His catcher cross-up could cost him some money on what’s been a slow market for free-agent starting pitchers. That should only help a team like the Braves,” Powell wrote.

Think about it. Chris Sale, Spencer Strider, Reynaldo Lopez and Valdez in the same rotation? That’s four guys who can dominate in October.

The timing works for both sides. Valdez wants another ring, and Atlanta’s got the pieces to make a serious run. Plus, having two lefties in Sale and Valdez gives manager Brian Snitker more flexibility against tough lineups.

What makes this even more intriguing is the market. Starting pitching has moved slowly this winter, which could drive down Valdez’s price. The Braves have payroll flexibility, and Anthopoulos has shown he’s not afraid to strike when the opportunity’s right.

All things considered, this feels like the type of move that could separate Atlanta from the pack in the NL East. They’ve got the foundation – now it’s about adding the piece that makes them elite again.
