Eugenio Suarez grabbed the National League home run lead in style, crushing two bombs against the Cardinals to reach 33 on the season.
The Diamondbacks third baseman entered the game trailing Shohei Ohtani by one. He didn’t stay behind for long.
Suarez launched his first homer in the opening frame, driving one to left field as Arizona jumped out to a quick 3-0 advantage over St. Louis. The blast tied him with Ohtani at 32.

But he wasn’t done. After the Diamondbacks tacked on two more runs in the second, Suarez stepped up again in the third and sent a solo shot over the fence to take the outright lead with number 33.

It was a rough return from the All-Star break for Cardinals starter Sonny Gray. The right-hander got shelled for 11 hits and seven earned runs through just three innings. Arizona was cruising 8-0 before recording an out in the fourth.
The multi-homer performance snapped a cold stretch for Suarez, who hadn’t gone deep since July 12 against the Angels. Ironically, he also homered twice in that game.
What makes this surge interesting is the timing. The 32-year-old has emerged as one of the more intriguing names ahead of the trade deadline, and he’s putting up the kind of numbers that’ll have contenders calling Arizona’s front office.
Suarez has been remarkably consistent with his power output. He’s reached 30 homers in every season since 2018, with the exception of the shortened 2020 campaign and 2023, when he managed 22. Last year, he got back on track with exactly 30.
Now sitting at 33 with plenty of season left, he’s on pace for one of his better power seasons. That’s exactly what teams looking for help at the hot corner want to see as the deadline approaches.
