The Blue Jays’ payroll keeps climbing, and they’re still trying to figure out what to do with George Springer’s contract. Toronto’s looking at a $261 million Opening Day tax payroll, which is a lot for a team that finished last in their division.

Springer’s $150 million deal, signed before 2021, hasn’t quite lived up to expectations. He’s still owed two more years, and his numbers have dropped each of the last four seasons. That’s not ideal for a team that’s also trying to lock up Vladimir Guerrero Jr. long-term.

There’s been some buzz about moving Springer before Opening Day. The 35-year-old outfielder might benefit from a fresh start, and the Jays could use the financial flexibility.

One interesting proposal from ClutchPoints’ Brayden Haena suggests sending Springer to Kansas City. The Royals would give up pitcher Kris Bubic and reliever Chris Stratton, with Toronto eating some of Springer’s salary.

It’s an intriguing idea. The Jays could clear an outfield spot for a young infielder and boost their bullpen depth. Kansas City would get a veteran presence and proven playoff performer to help their outfield situation.

Here’s the thing – the Royals are already over thier budget for 2024. They’re traditionally one of baseball’s lower-spending teams, so any deal would depend on how much of Springer’s contract Toronto’s willing to cover.

Springer might have another good season left in him. The Royals need outfield help, that’s no secret. But they’ll have to weigh whether taking on an aging veteran with a big contract is worth the gamble, even at a discount.
