The Toronto Blue Jays traded infielder Leo Jimenez to the Miami Marlins on Sunday, picking up prospect Dub Gleed and $250,000 in international bonus pool money in return.

The deal was reported by insider Francys Romero and makes sense for both sides. Jimenez didn’t make Toronto’s Opening Day roster and was out of minor league options, meaning he’d have to clear waivers before heading to Triple-A.

Rather than lose him for nothing, the Blue Jays found a trade partner in Miami.

Jimenez is 24 and has shown he can contribute at the major league level. His .229 batting average across 210 MLB plate appearances might not look impressive, but he’s posted a 101 wRC+ in his career – meaning he’s been slightly better than league average at creating runs.

That’s solid production from a utility infielder.

The issue for Toronto was roster space. They simply didn’t have room for Jimenez in their infield mix this season. Miami, though, is willing to give him a shot.

In return, the Blue Jays get Gleed – whose full name is William Stanton Gleed despite going by Dub – a ninth-round pick from the 2024 draft out of UC-Irvine. He’s already reached Double-A for 27 games and even got one game at Triple-A last season.

Gleed’s minor league numbers show a .252 average and .737 OPS. He’s not considered a top prospect, but there’s potential for him to develop into a useful utility player down the line.

The way I see it, this is smart roster management by Toronto. They turned a player who couldn’t crack their Opening Day roster into a young prospect and some international bonus money. That’s better than watching him clear waivers and potentially losing him anyway.

For Miami, they’re betting on Jimenez’s underlying numbers and giving him an opportunity he wouldn’t have gotten in Toronto. Sometimes a change of scenery is all a player needs.
