The Blue Jays are still looking to add firepower after missing out on Pete Alonso, who’s staying with the Mets. They’ve got options, and one intriguing possibility is making a play for Triston Casas from the Red Sox.

Toronto’s already been active this offseason, landing Anthony Santander and Andrés Giménez through trades. But they’re not done yet. They need another impact bat, and Casas could be their answer.

What makes Casas particularly interesting is his age and potential. He’s just 24, and he’s already showing he can handle big league pitching. Last year he put up a .800 OPS with 13 homers in 63 games. For his career, he’s slashing .250/.357/.473 – solid numbers for a young first baseman.

“The Blue Jays have the capabilities to swing a blockbuster trade this winter,” writes Zach Pressnell of FanSided. “Not only do they have the money to chase the big name free agents like Alonso and company, but they also have a loaded farm system of prospects.”

Here’s where it gets interesting: bringing in Casas could help Toronto’s efforts to keep Vladimir Guerrero Jr. long-term. Guerrero’s heading into his walk year, and giving him a young, talented running mate might make staying in Toronto more appealing. The move would shift Guerrero to third base, where he’s played before.

It’s worth noting this could work for Boston too. They could finally move Rafael Devers to first base, something they’ve been considering for a while.

While Casas isn’t Alonso – few are when it comes to pure power – he’s the kind of young, controllable talent that could make the Blue Jays’ lineup even more dangerous. With their loaded farm system, they’ve got the pieces to make it happen if they want to.
