The Toronto Blue Jays are going to need starting pitching help at the deadline. That’s pretty much a given at this point, assuming they keep playing up to expectations over the next few months.

The front office has shown they’re not afraid to make moves when the opportunity’s there. They’ve been aggressive lately, and there’s no reason to think that’ll change if this team stays in contention.

Erick Fedde keeps coming up as a name to watch. Bleacher Report recently highlighted the right-hander as a potential target, and he makes sense for what the Jays need.

“For the second time in three years, the White Sox took a flyer on Fedde and might be reaping a reward at the deadline—if they even end up being a seller, which is the furthest thing from a guarantee at this point, 0.5 games back in the AL Central. Fedde had a 3.11 ERA when they traded him (and more) to the Cardinals in that three-team swap that netted them Miguel Vargas (and more), and he entered Tuesday’s start against the Angels with a 3.24 ERA this year. If he’s anywhere close to that number 12 weeks from now, there will be a bidding war for his services.”

Fedde’s been around the block. He broke in with Washington back in 2017 and has made stops with the White Sox, Cardinals, Braves, and Brewers since then. He’s back in Chicago now for his second stint, carrying a 4.30 ERA this season.

He’s not going to blow anyone away with his stuff, but that’s not really the point here.

The Blue Jays need innings. They need depth. Fedde can give them both, and he’ll probably come at a reasonable price. The Las Vegas native isn’t flashy, but he’s exactly the type of veteran arm that can help a rotation stay healthy down the stretch.

That’s where Toronto finds itself right now – needing reliable options more than ace-level talent. Fedde fits that profile, and the cost shouldn’t be prohibitive for a front office that’s shown it’s willing to make moves when the team’s competitive.
