The Blue Jays picked up Jesus Sanchez from Houston this offseason, sending Joey Loperfido the other way in what wasn’t exactly a blockbuster deal.
But here’s the thing – if Sanchez can tap into what made him productive in Miami a couple years back, Toronto might’ve found themselves a steal.
The 6-foot-4 outfielder from the Dominican Republic is 28 and brings a lefty bat that could solve some problems against right-handed pitching. He split last season between Miami and the Astros, hitting .237 with 14 homers and 13 steals across both stops.
Those numbers don’t jump off the page, but Sanchez has shown he can do more. His best season came in 2023 when he posted a .777 OPS in 125 games with 23 doubles and 14 home runs. He followed that up with a .731 OPS in 2024, adding 25 doubles, 18 homers, and 16 steals over 149 games.
That’s solid production from a guy who’s likely to start in left field, at least against righties.
The projected outfield alignment has Sanchez in left, Daulton Varsho in center, and Addison Barger in right. It’s a setup that gives Toronto some athletic upside and baserunning ability they didn’t have before.
What makes this interesting is Sanchez spent most of his career grinding it out in Miami, where good seasons tend to get overlooked. The talent’s been there – he just hasn’t had much opportunity to showcase it on a contender.
Now he’s with a Blue Jays team that’s serious about competing. That’s where players like Sanchez can really make their mark.
Sometimes the under-the-radar moves end up mattering more than the splashy signings. We’ll see if this is one of those times.
