The Blue Jays are eyeing Pete Alonso as they try to convince Vladimir Guerrero Jr. to stick around long-term. It’s a move that could reshape their lineup – and their future.
Toronto’s facing a critical moment with Guerrero entering his final year before free agency. They’re not just battling the clock, they’re trying to climb out of last place in baseball’s toughest division.
Money’s not the only factor here. The Jays need to show Guerrero they’re serious about competing, even if they end up being the highest bidder for his services next winter.
That’s where Alonso comes in. The longtime Mets slugger’s market hasn’t developed as expected, creating an opportunity for Toronto. A first base/DH rotation with Guerrero could give the Jays one of baseball’s most potent power combinations.
BALLCAP Sports’ Jim Riley sees Toronto as Alonso’s likely destination:
“I’m going to hammer the Blue Jays for Pete Alonso, because Pete Alonso does not have options,” Riley said. “These teams that have the need on the field, don’t have the money… There is a desperate team in Toronto trying to spend money, trying to improve the club.”
Let’s put Alonso’s power in perspective – his 226 home runs over six seasons trails only Aaron Judge during that span. He’s also been remarkably durable, never missing more than 10 games in a season.
The way I see it, a three-year deal with player options could work for both sides. It’d give Toronto flexibility while showing Guerrero they’re committed to winning now. If the two sluggers click, the Jays could work on keeping either one – or both – for the long haul.
