Chad Dallas made quite the first impression Thursday, turning in a pair of clutch performances in his MLB debut as the Blue Jays took on Atlanta.

The reliever’s highlight came in the third inning when he snagged a comebacker behind his back to escape a jam with runners on the corners.

That’s the kind of play that gets remembered. Dominic Smith hit it right back at Dallas, who reacted instinctively and made the grab look routine.

The timing couldn’t have been better for Toronto, which was protecting a 3-1 lead.

Dallas had worked himself into that spot after allowing some traffic. Ronald Acuna Jr. led off with an infield single, stole second, then scored on Matt Olson’s sacrifice fly. Mauricio Dubon had singled and eventually reached third on a wild pitch after Dallas walked Michael Harris II.

But the rookie stayed composed and delivered when it mattered.

Dallas actually entered the game in the second inning after starter Mason Fluharty ran into trouble. He inherited Harris at third base – not exactly an ideal welcome to the big leagues.

The way Dallas handled that situation probably told his teammates everything they needed to know. He got Austin Riley to foul out to third, walked Mike Yastrzemski, then struck out catcher Sandy Leon to strand the runner.

Two innings, two pressure situations, two clean escapes. That’s how you make a debut stick in people’s minds.
