Blue Jays Lock Up Alejandro Kirk Through 2030 With $58 Million Extension
The Toronto Blue Jays have signed catcher Alejandro Kirk to a five-year, $58 million contract extension that will keep him with the club through the 2030 season.
“BREAKING: Alejandro Kirk and the Toronto Blue Jays are in agreement on a five-year, $58 million contract extension, source says,” MLB Insider Robert Murray reported on X. “The structure, which includes a signing bonus and no club options, allows him to enter free agency after his age-31 season. Kirk is represented by Eric Izen and Greg Genske of Vayner Sports.”
The deal replaces the one-year, $4.6 million contract Kirk had previously signed to avoid arbitration. It’s a significant commitment to the 25-year-old backstop during what’s been an otherwise quiet offseason for Toronto on the extension front.
Kirk’s new contract places him fifth among catchers in total money, trailing only Sean Murphy, Salvador Perez, J.T. Realmuto and Will Smith. The Blue Jays clearly see him as their long-term solution behind the plate, especially after he spent the offseason preparing for full-time catching duties in Mexico.
The catcher slashed .253/.319/.359 with just five home runs last season, a step back from his breakout 2022 campaign when he earned his lone All-Star selection and won a Silver Slugger Award. His career numbers remain solid with a .264/.344/.391 slash line, 36 homers and 187 RBIs across four seasons. This spring, Kirk has looked sharp, hitting .302 with two homers and eight RBIs in 17 games.
Kirk’s extension gives Toronto certainty at catcher after previously sharing duties with Danny Jansen. The move comes at a time when the Blue Jays face uncertainty with their other young stars – the team has yet to extend Vladimir Guerrero Jr. or Bo Bichette, both of whom could potentially hit free agency after the 2025 season.
