Astros Risk Losing Critical Catcher to Free Agency

Victor Caratini wants to catch more than Houston’s willing to offer, and that’s creating some interesting possibilities around the league.

The Astros would love to bring back their versatile backup, but The Athletic’s Chandler Rome reports other clubs are looking at Caratini as an everyday option. That’s where things get complicated for Houston.

“Victor Caratini became a critical part of [Joe] Espada’s roster flexibility, contributing as a designated hitter, occasional first baseman, and as one of the team’s most trusted pinch hitters,” Rome wrote.

The problem? Caratini’s probably ready to catch more than 60-70 games after two productive seasons backing up Yainer Diaz.

“The Astros have interest in a reunion with Caratini, but clubs in search of everyday catchers have identified Caratini as a target and could make him more lucrative offers,” Rome added. “It stands to reason, too, that Caratini would prefer more regular playing time after two successful seasons in Houston.”

If Caratini walks, Houston’s catching depth gets thin quick. They’ve got Cesar Salazar on the roster, but he’s played just 36 games since 2023. That’s not exactly a resume that screams “ready for Opening Day backup duties.”

The New York Yankees make sense as a landing spot. They need a right-handed bat behind the plate, and while Caratini’s a switch-hitter, he could platoon with Austin Wells or split time at first base with Ben Rice.

The Rangers are looking after non-tendering Jonah Heim, and the Mariners could be in play too if they don’t bring back Mitch Garver.

It’s one of those situations where a player’s success in a backup role might price him out of staying in that same role. Caratini proved he can handle more responsibility – now he’s probably going to get the chance to show it somewhere else.
