The Astros are reshaping their infield for 2024, and they’re not done yet. They’ve offered free-agent infielder Jorge Polanco a one-year, $4 million deal, according to MLB Insider Hector Gomez.
It’s an interesting move for Houston, who’s already made significant changes this offseason. They’ve brought in Christian Walker at first base and Isaac Paredes at third – crucial additions with Kyle Tucker headed out and Alex Bregman likely following suit in 2025.
Polanco would give the Astros valuable infield depth. The switch-hitter can back up Jose Altuve at second, Jeremy Pena at short, and even fill in at third base when needed. That versatility could be key for Houston’s infield rotation.
Thing is, Polanco’s coming off a tough year. His .651 OPS in 118 games with Seattle was the lowest of his career, but there’s a good explanation – he was dealing with chronic left knee soreness all season. He’s since had arthroscopic surgery to fix his patellar tendon.
Here’s what makes this interesting: before his rough 2023, Polanco was pretty solid. The 2019 AL All-Star put up a .780 OPS over ten seasons with the Twins. If that knee’s really fixed, the Astros might be getting a steal at $4 million.
The 31-year-old’s experience and switch-hitting ability could make him a valuable utility piece for Houston. That’s especially true if he returns to his pre-2023 form, when he was one of the more reliable middle infielders in the American League.
