The Boston Red Sox are running out of time to add a right-handed power bat before Spring Training begins. They’ve kept tabs on free agent third baseman Alex Bregman all winter, but landing him won’t be easy.

Bregman’s market is heating up, with multiple teams reportedly offering more than Boston. But some interesting comments from Astros GM Dana Brown have sparked speculation about Bregman’s future in Houston.

At Houston’s annual media luncheon, Brown referred to Bregman in the past tense, even saying the team “lost Bregman,” according to The Athletic’s Chandler Rome. Brown later walked that back, noting they’re still talking with Bregman “because he’s still available.”

What’s clear is that Boston needs to get aggressive if they want to land the two-time World Series champion. That would mean stepping outside their comfort zone this offseason – something they haven’t shown much appetite for so far.

There’s also the Kristian Campbell factor to consider. If Boston’s top prospect is ready to handle second base duties early in the season, that might be the smarter long-term play for the Red Sox than making a splash with Bregman.

The clock is ticking on Boston’s offseason plans. They’re still exploring trade options, including discussions about a certain All-Star with a $260 million contract. But with pitchers and catchers reporting soon, they’ll need to make their move quickly if they want to upgrade their right-handed hitting.
