The Houston Astros are approaching another trade deadline with more questions than answers, and their recent track record of half-measures isn’t exactly inspiring confidence.
Owner Jim Crane has made it clear he’s not interested in crossing the luxury tax threshold. That stance hasn’t changed much throughout his tenure, and after the moves they made this offseason, it’s hard to imagine they’ll suddenly open the checkbook now.
But here’s the thing – the Astros have another legitimate shot at competing in the American League. Standing pat would be doing a disservice to what could be their final window with this core group.
The front office might need to get creative with the pieces they have. That’s where Jake Meyers comes into play. The Athletic recently noted that his trade value has never been higher, presenting an interesting opportunity.
“Meyers’ trade value has never been higher. McCormick’s is at its lowest. Parting with either man would be contingent on Melton showing he is worthy of an everyday role — nowhere near a guarantee — and must also come with more additions to a lineup that needs them.”
Meyers is having a solid year, hitting .300 across 203 at-bats. The power numbers aren’t eye-popping – just three home runs – but he’s shown more pop in previous seasons.
What makes him attractive to other clubs is his contract situation. The right-handed outfielder won’t hit free agency until 2028, giving teams four years of control. That’s the type of asset that can bring back meaningful talent at the deadline.
The Astros have other outfield pieces they’re evaluating too. Chas McCormick’s value has taken a hit, while Joey Loperfido needs to prove he’s ready for everyday duty. Trading Meyers only makes sense if they’re confident in their internal options and can address a bigger need elsewhere on the roster.
It’s a calculated risk, but one that might be necessary if they want to make the kind of moves that could actually put them over the top. The question is whether Crane and the front office are willing to be that aggressive with their championship window potentially closing.
