Jon Singleton is heading back to Houston for the third time in his career.

The Astros called up the veteran first baseman for Sunday’s game, according to MLB.com’s Brian McTaggart. It’s been just over a month since Singleton signed with the organization on June 22.

This marks another chapter in one of baseball’s more interesting comeback stories. The 33-year-old lefty first broke into the majors with Houston back in 2014, when he was still considered a top prospect after the Astros acquired him from Philadelphia.

That first stint didn’t go as planned.

Singleton hit below .200 in his initial big league exposure, then battled substance abuse issues that derailed his career. He spent time playing in the Mexican league before eventually working his way back to MLB with Milwaukee.

The Astros gave him another shot in 2023, and he responded with a solid 2024 campaign that saw him hit .234 with 13 homers. He briefly joined the Mets organization this season before finding his way back to Houston.

Since joining Triple-A Sugar Land, Singleton’s been productive at the plate. He’s batting .254/.427/.460 with four homers in 18 games, showing the patience and power that made him a prospect in the first place.

What makes this callup interesting is the timing. The Astros are clearly comfortable with Singleton as a depth piece, and his ability to get on base could be valuable down the stretch.

It’s a testament to perseverance. More than a decade after his debut, Singleton’s still finding ways to contribute at the highest level.
