The Red Sox saw their series win streak end today against the Athletics, but they’ve got reasons to stay optimistic heading into a six-game road trip. Boston happens to be one of the most dominant teams when they’re the away team, so this might be exactly what they need to start another run.
Even better news: Adley Rutschman looks ready to return, possibly by the middle game of their upcoming series against the Blue Jays in Toronto.
Rutschman came to Boston already dealing with a left wrist injury that landed him on the IL. He’d already gotten through most of the recovery time and just needed a brief rehab assignment before returning to action.
His rehab started yesterday, and he helped AAA Worcester demolish the Lehigh Iron Pigs 19-0. Rutschman went 1-for-2 with a double, two walks, and two RBIs in that blowout win.
He went 0-for-3 today, but Boston seems convinced he’s ready. Reports indicate he’s flying with the team to Toronto and could start as early as Tuesday.
What Rutschman Brings
The Red Sox acquired Rutschman specifically to upgrade their catcher position, which was one of the worst in baseball this season. That’s not hyperbole – Boston’s catching situation was genuinely holding them back.
Rutschman brings three All-Star selections, a Silver Slugger award, and serious offensive production. He’s slashing .251/.331/.433 for a .764 OPS with 19 doubles, eight homers, and 47 RBIs in 67 games this season.
But it’s not just the bat that makes him valuable.
Behind the plate, Rutschman has a cannon for an arm and frames pitches exceptionally well. That combination of offensive production and defensive excellence is exactly what Boston’s been missing.
The way I see it, Rutschman’s skill set should translate perfectly to Fenway Park. He’s got the type of approach that can take advantage of the Green Monster and all the quirky dimensions that make Fenway unique.
The Bigger Picture
If Rutschman can become a key contributor over the final seven weeks of the season, Boston might have something special brewing. They’re already playing at an elite level, and adding a proven All-Star catcher could be the piece that puts them over the top.
There’s also the contract situation to consider. Rutschman’s got limited team control remaining, and with the potential 2027 lockout looming, that timeline becomes even more compressed.
Boston needs to make the package they sent for him worthwhile. If he performs the way they expect – and helps push this team toward a World Series run – they should be ready to discuss a long-term extension as soon as possible.
All things considered, Rutschman’s return couldn’t come at a better time. The Red Sox are rolling, they’re about to hit the road where they’ve been dominant, and now they’re getting back one of the game’s best catchers.
